Just one of the hundreds of unique and beautiful families who are integral to our community, Lomami, Chance, and Michaela have been a part of Project Worthmore since their arrival from the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 2018.
Kai Ra begins each morning by giving praise to the things she is thankful for. One of the things she praises is the United States, the country that she has called home for the past ten years.
This is Hamadi. He’s from Somalia. One of the countries from which we no longer accept refugees – a reality further cemented by a Supreme Court ruling a few days ago.
We begin with introductions. We state our names, where we come from, and how long we’ve been in Denver, always careful to emphasize proper English structures. Contractions, idioms, phrasal verbs, all of these are carefully extracted from our speech. The volunteers and teachers, including myself, distill endless amounts of nuance and data into simple sentences….
